East Coast Sunrise

The sea-fragrant air insinuates itself into your mind,
Wrapping itself around your waking dreams like a warm blanket,
Then gently touches your eyelids, your mouth, your body;
A lover’s caress, to bring you out of sleep.
Outside, foam-flecked waves rear snowy heads
The descend, emptying their essence onto the warm, waiting sand.
Undisturbed by the bustle of wind-blown clouds
The sun begins its daily trek across the sky.
You open sleepy eyes to a vibrant, verdant landscape bathed in beauty:
The chalky crests of nearby hills search out the heavens
While the springy mat of green grape-leaves invites your feet.
A taste of Eden.

Rain

English rain
Is not like Caribbean rain
Each pointed drop
Drills through the remnants of the warmth
You wrapped inside you
When you left home.
Just enough for discomfort
But without the honesty
To drench you.
Caribbean rain
Does not pretend
It wets you through and through
Leaving you soaked and annoyed
Yet knowing the sun’s not far behind
While in England
More grey days
With bullet rain
Wait to follow
The one that’s
Pissing down
Pissing about
Pissing you
Off.

Floral Treats

If you want to try something ambitious
Add petals to make meals delicious
Take some advice
On making meals nice
And serve up a dish that’s nutritious.

I know cos’ I have to the assurance
Of a certain blog writer, Sue Lawrence.
A web release states
That flowers are great
For cooking: I don’t need insurance

So when next you’re starting to forage
Try marigolds, roses or borage.
Enhance your provender
With nasturtiums, lavender
And maybe a small dose of courage.

When it’s time for the next Mother’s Day
Do not buy a bouquet or nosegay
But sit back and savour
That delicate flavour.
Don’t send flowers; eat them, I say!.

Gratitude

Thank you for every wispy, barely-there hair on her fragile skull
Thank you for her questing hands,
ever stronger with longer and longer reach,
that try to touch the world and bring it to her.

Thank you for her sturdy legs and feet
now planted to get a taller perspective on the world.

Thank you for her bright eyes, rosebud lips,
her eagerness to grasp and feel and taste
and know the world that daily expands around her.

Thank you for her skin,
especially those spots on her neck and belly
that distil that special blend of softness
and johnsons-baby-washedness that is the essence of babydom.

Thank you for the very selfness of her self,
the parts of us now parts of her,
the fizz in her eye,
the ready smile,
the chuckle deep in her throat when she’s really amused,
often by something small.

Thank you for all that she is and will become.
Thank you for my child.

Four Short Poems

Dripping, Tripping, Slipping
Kitchen faucet’s
Dripping, dripping
While my mind is
Tripping, tripping
Every drop drills through my brain
Plumber must come out again
Puddles causing
Slipping, slipping
While the tap is dripping, dripping

Diamond Ditty
I want lots of diamonds, diamond rings.
I need to be surrounded by beautiful things.
When I see fine jewels my heart sings.
I simply cannot help it; I just love those blings
Cover me with diamonds, shower me with gold
Fill my home with presents, whether new or old.
But most of all remember above all things
I want a lot of diamonds, diamond rings

Untitled Haikus
A garden of life,
Filled with oranges so sweet
Replete, I enjoy.

Bird, perched on a branch
Calls its mate, beseechingly
Telling of food found

Butterfly

Butterfly (for Lisa)

When you crawl into your hole
It’s not to hide
But a necessary part
Of your becoming.
Not every transformation
Takes place
In the pitiless glare
Of others’  expectations.
Rest and contemplation
May also feed
That creative spirit
To force the radiant colours
Out of that caterpillar’s
Cocoon.

Now here is my gift for you: Sugar – High:

I taste you.
Salty comes to mind,
yet earthly rich,
the way I like my wine.
I send
the tip of my tongue to explore
some more – and find another blend
of you.
Intoxicating brew.
Is it the aroma of something tart?
or maybe… my taste buds finding it hard?
to believe it’s your manliness I try
the so called candy of my eye
which seems to tease but never ease
me into a mounting sugar high.
