Surat

Surat is a port city in the Indian state of Gujarat. As of 1999, Surat and its metropolitan area had a population of approximately 3.5 million.

History

It is one of the first settlements established by Portuguese navigators in the 15th century.

In 1992, violents riots took place between Hindus and Muslims, and in 1994, an epidemy of plague spread in the city. After it was cleaned up it was declared 2nd cleanest city of gujarat.

Geography

The climate is tropical and the monsoom is abundant (about 2500 mm a year).

Culture
