Limousin language

The Limousin language is a Romance language akin to Provençal spoken by some people in the part of southern France known as Limousin. The Limousin language is a variety of the Occitan language, and as such is a langue d'oc.

Limousin is a moribund language, and is used primarily by rural people over age 50. All speakers speak French as a first or second language. Due to the French single language policy, it is not recognised by the government and is disappearing.

Limousin is notable because, while mutually intelligible with Provençal, it has several langue d'oïl (northern French) influences. As with all langues d'oc, the status of Limousin as a separate language rather than a dialect of Occitan is hotly debated.
